Interested in applying to Fulbright Teacher Exchanges? First, select the program that best fits you, carefully read program details, and confirm you are eligible to apply. Next, review our tips below for crafting a strong application. There is no single winning “formula,” but following this guidance will help your application stand out!

1.  Connect the Dots

Fulbrighters build lasting connections among a global network of peers and promote mutual understanding that helps solve pressing global problems. Consider how Fulbright fits with your professional interests, personal values, and extracurricular pursuits. Reflect on ways you can demonstrate engagement in global topics and collaborative work on a local and global level. This is your chance to showcase your passion for education and share your story.

“The part that took me most time was organizing my thoughts and everything that I have done in the past, because I've been teaching for close to 20 years. Organize your thoughts to be in tune with what the program is about and reflect who you are as an educator.” - Malini Banerjee, Second-Grade Teacher, New Jersey to Morocco, 2024

2.  Highlight Community Impact

Detail the positive impact that Fulbright Teacher Exchanges would have on you, your students, your colleagues, and your community. Compelling applications include innovative ways to create lasting connections and translate the experience to others upon your return home.

“Show your love for the profession. Show how you are willing to learn and grow. Show how you can take this professional development and apply it at your school.” - Lucy McKellar, Elementary School Principal, Mississippi to the United Kingdom, 2024

3.  Be Specific

Craft concise and clear responses. Identify specific ways that program components will develop your educational practice, improve your ability to prepare students to be future leaders, and enable you to bring global knowledge, skills, and perspectives to your school. You may choose to focus on how you previously demonstrated leadership, how you engage students in solving global challenges, and/or how you see potential for developing lasting connections with your host country community.

4.  Leverage the Alumni Network

When in doubt, reach out! Explore alumni-driven resources for applicants to learn more about the application process and past projects:

Outside the U.S.? Contact the local U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission for alumni panels and information sessions about applying.

5.  Gather Feedback

Reach out to colleagues, friends, and Fulbright Teacher Exchange alumni to request feedback on your application materials. Direct them to specific program pages on our website so that they have an understanding of program components and the selection process. Several rounds of revisions and proofreading will help you fine-tune your goals, consider multiple perspectives, and polish your statements to maximize impact.

“I would recommend having at least 3 to 5 other people review your application responses to make sure they connect with the educators in the room and any other stakeholders beyond the classroom.” - Anjelica Tynes, High School Career Counselor, California to Taiwan, 2024
