As a computer science teacher in Oregon, Shawn Patrick Higgins sees open-source digital tools as critical ways for students to develop technology skills. They demonstrate that “even older hardware can support free, high quality educational tools, all while being significantly more accessible for students.”

During his Fulbright Teacher Exchange in the Philippines, Shawn utilized these tools to enhance the teaching of STEM subjects. He conducted teacher trainings and co-taught computer animation lessons alongside a Filipino partner teacher.

Shawn believes that these skills can translate into future job opportunities, especially for rural students entering the workforce at a time when remote and digital work is growing more common. Since his return to the United States, he has stayed in touch with his host school, conducting virtual lessons for Filipino students and making plans for them to collaborate with his American students.
